ACADEMY IN SOUTH MIAMI

Armour Dance Theatre, formerly known as Thomas Armour Youth Ballet (TAYB) has provided quality dance training to members of the Miami-Dade County community since 1949. Armour Dance Theatre has led the effort of creating a dance community that reflects the diversity of Miami through community programs, public performances, and scholarships.

Armour Dance Theatre takes pride in being the oldest dance conservatory in Miami, providing quality dance training taught by professional teaching artists from the dance community.

Armour Dance Theatre is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools.

Mommy & Me Ballet

Ages 24-36 months: based on the work of Anne Green Gilbert called “Brain Dance”. This class is designed to give your 2-year-old creative play while laying the foundation for healthy brain development, sensory-motor development and life-long learning.

Music Classes (Infants & Toddlers)

Play musically with your infant/toddler and grow their motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and language and cognitive connections. Children will be introduced to rhythm and tonal patterns and lay the groundwork for speech and singing. Join us and awaken your child’s natural curiosity and response to music!

Elementary IV (Pre-Pointe) - 5th Grade - Ballet

Your child’s ballet education continues to build upon the foundation of the Elementary III work. Elm IV prepares the student for pointe work with a focus on alignment, strength, transitions and balance. A minimum of three times a week is required. Students will add ribbons to their ballet shoes this year. ADT will provide the ribbon and help to sew them on.

Beginning Pointe work is added for the girls. Alignment, technique, conditioning continue to be the focus of each class. Students are required to attend 3 classes a week.

Class time and frequency Three times a week for 1.5-2 hours. A fourth ballet class is offered at no charge. This class includes conditioning using tools like fitness balls and Therabands

Conditioning: Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program that is geared towards injury prevention. This program is designed to enhance students’ technique by focussing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance. It is a unique training system using ballet-technique specific exercises to train skill acquisition in a graded and progressive manner from junior through to advanced levels. PBT focuses on core strength, weight placement and alignment of the body with carefully designed exercises and repetitions of these exercises that trigger their muscle memory. With the use of an exercise ball, the students gain a great sense of posture and weight-placement whilst feeling each correct muscle group working throughout each exercise, which then stays with them whilst performing.

Contemporary

The Horton Technique is a technique that emphasizes a whole body, anatomical approach to dance that includes flexibility, strength, coordination of the body and spatial awareness to enable unrestricted, dramatic freedom of expression. The technique includes 17 fortification studies that focuses on strengthening, fortifying, and stretching through a series of movements that attend to different parts of the body. Horton uses flat backs and lateral stretches, tilt lines and lunges, all movements. Horton technique also incorporates lyrical, circular movements focusing on stretching in opposite directions.

As this technique is ballet based, students must also be enrolled in ballet classes.

Flamenco

Flamenco is a song, music, and dance style strongly influenced by the Gitanos but with deeper roots in Moorish musical traditions. It originated in Andalusia (Spain).

Pre-K 4 and Kindergarten –Tuesday 4 PM: This class focuses on mastering the basic arms, rhythms, and footwork techniques through exercises and short choreographies. Mantones and Fans will be provided.

1st and 2nd Grades – Tuesday 5 PM: This class focuses on mastering the basic arms, rhythms, and footwork techniques through exercises and short choreographies. Mantones and Fans will be provided.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades – Wednesday 5 PM: This class focuses on mastering the basic arms, rhythms, and footwork techniques through exercises and short choreographies. Mantones and Fans will be provided.

Middle School/High School (without training) – Monday 4:30-5:30 PM: This class focuses on mastering the basic arms, rhythms, and footwork techniques through exercises and short choreographies. Mantones and Fans will be provided.

Tap

Through the study of tap dancers learn to use their feet as a rhythm instrument. The footwork helps to develop agility, musicality, (including syncopation) and improv.

Intermediate/Advanced: Saturday 9:00-10:30 AM. This class is geared towards students who have strong technique, and an understanding of tap musicality. This class further explores interpretation, and improvisation. Students will develop personal style and expression as they continue to grow as tap artists.

Pre K 4/ Kindergarten (CM II and PB I) Saturday 10:30-11:30 AM Dancers will learn basic tap skills and terminology. Fundamentals such as balance and general alignment are introduced at this level.

1st and 2nd Grade (PBII and Elm I) Saturday 11:30 AM-12:30 PM Dancers are taught to add sounds to the basic tap steps. Musicality is stressed while teaching the student to count their sounds between the beats to create more complex rhythms

3rd, 4th and 5th Grades ELM II, III, IV Saturday 12:30-1:30 PM More intricate variations are added at this level. As the complexity of the steps increases, it is necessary for the student to focus on body alignment to maintain balance and build strength.

Broadway Jazz

Broadway Jazz is a unique blend of ballet, modern, and jazz. It is full of high energy and story-telling. While this class uses music and songs from Broadway, there is no singing requirement. However, most students cannot resist singing along!

As this technique is ballet-based, it is preferable that students also be enrolled in ballet classes.

Hip Hop

Our Hip hop class is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. This high-energy class focuses on body awareness, coordination, grooves, and patterning. More advanced levels focus on adapting to many different styles, incorporating many different dynamics, and developing the dancers’ own voice and style. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual styles and personality to the movements.

TUITION

Tuition is based on lessons received for an entire school year and not on the number of classes received each month. This is standard private school policy. There are 9 installments, in addition to the annual registration fee of $75. Payments begin in August, with the first installment including August and September, and continuing through May of the following year. Please make out your check to Armour Dance Theatre. We do not send out statements. Remember that if your child misses a class, he/she has many opportunities within the week to make up that class. Please check with your child’s teacher for the appropriate day and time.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE

Armour Dance Theatre offers a Summer intensive every year. This summer intensive has been taking place for decades offering students quality dance training with a variety of dance genres. This dance intensive gives students the time to perfect their technique and skills with professional teachers.

Intensives at Armour Dance Theatre are flexible you can pay by the week or you can pay a flat discounted rate for the entire summer.

SUMMER SCHEDULE & TUITION

Classes are available in the summer for creative movement, pre-ballet, accelerated elementary levels through advanced. Please find your level below. Summer classes run June 10th – July 19th 2024. We will be offering a new one-week repertory workshop from July 22nd – July 26th 2024 If you are not familiar with our levels or aren’t sure where the student should be placed, please contact us at (305)667-5543 or Info@armourdance.org
